Short and sweet – for Magpie Tales

July 11, 2010

This was the picture prompt from Magpie Tales this week, and as an exercise in brevity, here’s my response. My poem came entirely from the picture, but was given added meaning when I looked on Dictionary.Com to help me with a title and saw that ‘tomato’ is also recorded as slang for an attractive woman. Weird how these things link!

Crimson Nightshade

Downy tendrils
bear bulbous
fruit,
red as partly ripened
rump,
hung with humid
droplet jewels,
savored
by parched
and wanting lips;
juicy
scrumptious
summer fun.

    I had almost forgotten those old black and white films … and the term ‘hot tomato.’ Thanks for the memories. Great Magpie.

    Thanks everyone for your comments – I wanted to capture the fullsome tomato in all it’s glory. Loved reading the poem out loud cause it made a rolling feel in my mouth just like a little tomato all of it’s own 🙂

    tomatoes and summer go hand in hand…your poem makes me wish I liked tomatoes. Alas, I do not so I can only savor your words and the images they evoke…not truth behind them! 😉
